Lay It On Down

今年は個人的に大好きなブルージーなハードロックを特色としたバンド THUNDER, RIVERDOGS のニューアルバムがリリースされ内容も素晴らしく、あとは来日してくれてライブを観ることが出来たら最高です。そして、数週間前に Kenny Wayne Shepherd のニューアルバム Lay It On Down のサイン入り限定のCDとブルーカラーレコードと前作のTシャツが届きました。ここ数週間ずーっと聴いていますがとにかく素晴らしく、今年のベストアルバムかもしれません。

Kenny Wayne Shepherd は 2nd Trouble Is... と 3rd Live On 辺りくらいから聴き始め、"Blue On Black" がヒットしましたよね。Live On 収録のボートラ "Fantasy Man" は当時良く聴いたのを思い出します。その後いったん離れたんですが、2011年リリースの How I Go からハマりだし、1曲目 "Never Lookin' Back" は今でもよく聴いている大好きな曲で、ブルースが根底にあるハードロックとでも表現したらいいのでしょうか、とにかく良い曲だと思います。"Never Lookin' Back" の PVには大好きなベーシストでフレットレスベースの名手 Tony Franklin が参加しており、次作の Goin' Home にはベーシストとしても参加しライブでもプレイしていました。

その後も色々な意味で Kenny Wayne Shepherd の動きには注目しており、How I Go, Goin' Home も基本的にやっていることは良い意味で何も変わらず 12，13曲収録されていました。前2作と異なるのは、今回のニューアルバム Lay It On Down は収録曲が11曲で、1曲がボートラでアルバムタイトル曲のアコースティックなので実質10曲で収録時間が42分と短く、1曲1曲が良く練られておりアルバムを通して捨て曲がなく、あっという間にアルバム1枚を聴き終えてしまいます。個人的に Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band の最高傑作ではないかと思います。さらに、あえて欲を言うならば全曲 Noah Hunt が歌う Lay It On Down を聴くことが出来たら最高です。

Kenny Wayne Shepherd 自らヴォーカルをとる1曲目の "Baby Got Gone" なんかは、センスの良いギターリフで本当に Kenny Wayne Shepherd がやりたい音楽なんだと納得させられます。Kenny Wayne Shepherd の奏でるギターの音色は相変わらず最高で気持ち良く弾きまくるソロにリフにアレンジも素晴らしく、ブルジーなヴォーカリスト Noah Hunt との相性も抜群で "Nothing But The Night", "How Low Can You Go" , "Ride Of Your Life" なんかは安心して聴くことが出来ます。そして、なんと言っても Noah Hunt がヴォーカルをとる2曲のバーラード "Hard Lesson Learned", "Louisiana Rain" が素晴らしく、Kenny Wayne Shepherd の奏でるギターの音色に Noah Hunt のエモーショナルなヴォーカルも本当に素晴らしいと思います。"Hard Lesson Learned" のサビの歌詞に Here I Go Again と出てきて、最初聴いたときはおっと思い、WHITESNAKE 以外の曲の歌詞で初めて聴きました。いっそのことタイトルも "Here I Go Again" でも良かったとも思います。もう1曲のバラード "Louisiana Rain" のメロディーが本当に美しく素晴らしい曲だと思います。"Down For Love" も Kenny Wayne Shepherd がヴォーカルで、本当にこういうタイプの曲が好きなんだなあとも思うし、ギターソロにリフにアレンジにセンスを感じます。爽快なロックンロール的な "How Low Can You Go" は Noah Hunt のヴォーカルの上手さと Kenny Wayne Shepherd の奏でるギターソロは滅茶苦茶カッコイイです。

前2作 How I Go, Goin' Home もそうでしたが、現時点で Lay It On Down の日本盤が発売されてないのは本当に残念で仕方ありませんが、でも、なんとなく大ヒットの予感が。もうひとつ残念なのは Tony Franklin がバンドメンバーから外れてしまったこと。でも、Tony Franklin のフレットレスベースの音色を Kenny Wayne Shepherd の音楽で表現するには制限があるし本領が発揮できてないと思うので、もうすぐニューアルバムがリリースされるであろう John Sykes と再びプレイし、存分にフレットレスベースの本領を発揮して欲しいと思います。まずは、Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band の Lay It On Down の日本盤発売、そして、日本公演が決まることを切に願います。

PRESS RELEASE: LAY IT ON DOWN, the ninth album from five-time Grammy nominee and critically acclaimed guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd, is out July 21 on Provogue Records in Europe and August 4 on Concord Records in North America and the rest of the world. Recorded at Echophone Studios in Shepherd’s hometown of Shreveport, Louisiana and produced by Shepherd with Marshall Altman, the album was largely recorded live in the studio to analog tape.

Shepherd’s band on LAY IT ON DOWN features his long-time lead vocalist Noah Hunt, the rhythm section from Shepherd’s supergroup side project The RIDES, Chris Layton (drums) and Kevin McCormick (bass), and keyboardist Jimmy McGorman.

“I’m proud of the album we have delivered to the fans and I think they'll be excited by what they hear,” notes Shepherd. “The band we’ve assembled did a fantastic job bringing these songs to life and conveying the musical message to the listener. Now we are looking forward to bringing this new music to the live show to watch it develop even more.” Kenny further discusses the writing/recording process in the new album’s attached video trailer
The KWSBand will celebrate the album’s release with a U.S. tour that kicks off August 9 in Westbury, NY.
